The US National Park Service hosts National Parks Week April 15-23 and Planeta.com invites readers and editors to contribute tips and suggestions for visiting and protecting the wilderness areas and historical landmarks. Updates will be made throughout the week on the Planeta Wiki.

"National Parks Week coincides with the annual celebration of Earth Day," says Planeta.com founder Ron Mader. "We will be paying attention to activities around the USA."

Among the parks that will be featured this week: Everglades, Grand Canyon, Lake Mead, Yosemite and Zion.

"Planeta Wiki editors are cordially invited to finesse our online guides so that they include practical visitor tips as well as links to more scholarly reports," said Mader. "We also invite the public to share photos of parks and protected areas in our World Parks Flickr Group.

Photos and tweets from the national parks are considered for inclusion in our World Parks Flipboard.

Economic Benefits to Local Communities from National Park Visitation and Payroll, 2010

(PDF - 1.60MB) is now available. This study provides updated estimates of NPS visitor spending for 2010 and extends the analysis to include impacts of the NPS payroll on local economies. Visitor spending and local impacts are estimated using the Money General Model version 2 (MGM2) based on 2010 park visits, spending averages from park visitor surveys, and local area economic multipliers. Impacts of the NPS payroll are estimated based on 2010 payroll data for each park.

New Report Shows Rise in Hunting, Fishing and Wildlife-Related Recreation Participation in 28 States - Billions of dollars generated for local economies and conservation

Participation in wildlife-associated recreation increased in 28 states since 2006, according to the findings of the 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation State Overview Report released by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today. The State Overview Report is the second in a series of reports to be released by the Service over the next few months highlighting results from the National Survey. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar released the first report on August 15, 2012. The National Survey, conducted since 1955, measures participation in these activities and related spending on trips and equipment across the nation and in individual states. The 2011 National Survey data show that hunters, anglers and wildlife watchers spent $145 billion last year on related gear, trips and other purchases such as licenses, tags and land leasing or ownership.

Quotes

The symphony of natural sounds within our national parks is an important natural resource and a critical component of the ecological communities that parks seek to preserve. Understanding the role of sound and acoustics in a healthy ecosystem is critical to their effective management and protection.
- World Listening Day, National Parks Service

Outdoor recreation at parks and forests and other public lands brings in tourism dollars, attracting new businesses and encouraging spending at lodging and food establishments and of course park souvenirs.
- President Barrack Obama, signing a proclamation establishing the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument in New Mexico

Who will gainsay that the parks contain the highest potentialities of national pride, national contentment, and national health? A visit inspires love of country; begets contentment; engenders pride of possession; contains the antidote for national restlessness. ... He is a better citizen with a keener appreciation of the privilege of living here who has toured the national parks.

Green Parks Plan is directed at park facilities and how they are managed and operated. It sets forth nine strategic goals:

  • Continuously Improve Environmental Performance: meet or exceed the requirements of all applicable environmental laws.
  • Be Climate Friendly and Climate Ready: reduce greenhouse gas emissions and determine how facilities can be adapted to respond to the risk posed by climate change.
  • Be Energy Smart: improve energy performance and increase reliance on renewable energy.
  • Be Water Wise: improve water use efficiency.
  • Green Our Rides: transform vehicle fleet and adopt greener transportation methods.
  • Buy Green and Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle: purchase environmentally friendly products and increase waste diversion and recycling.
  • Preserve Outdoor Values: minimize the impact of facility operations on the external environment.
  • Adopt Best Practices: employ sustainable best practices in all park operations.

Wilderness Act

On September 3, 1964, the U.S. Congress passed into Public Law the Wilderness Act “To establish a National Wilderness Preservation System for the permanent good of the whole people, and for other purposes”. This law was established “In order to assure that an increasing population, accompanied by expanding settlement and growing mechanization, does not occupy and modify all areas within the United States and its possessions…” [Public Law 88-577].

National Landscape Conservation System

The National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS), made permanent by Congress in 2009, is a collection of 27 million acres of public land throughout the Western United States. Made up of National Monuments, National Conservation Areas and Wilderness Areas, the NLCS is the second largest collection of public lands set aside for conservation.

Rep. Grijalva is the founding co-chair of the National Landscape Conservation System Caucus. He was the lead House sponsor of legislation signed by the president permanently to establish the National Landscape Conservation System and has advocated increasing the system's funding.

Celebrations: Founder's Day

August 25 Founder's Day, National Park Service
On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the "Organic Act" which stated that the "[National Park Service] will conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and wildlife therein, and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations."

Jonathan Jarvis, director of the National Park Service, prefaced his June 14, 2016, mention of Austin with some agency self-celebration, telling the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform:
"The NPS manages many of our nation’s most iconic and beloved landscapes and historic sites. We are responsible for managing more than 400 individual parks with more than 84 million acres of land, stretching from Acadia National Park in the State of Maine to the National Park of American Samoa in the South Pacific. The NPS also manages numerous wild and scenic rivers and national trails; programs that recognize our nation’s historic structures; and programs that help local governments and organizations provide recreational opportunities and protect open space. We are seeing record-breaking visitation -- more than 300 million last year -- and the resulting economic activity created by the parks topped $16 billion."
"We are accomplishing all of this," Jarvis said next, "on an annual budget that is less than the city of Austin, Texas."

Happy Centennial, US National Parks. August 25, 2016 will be a day of great celebration in the national parks as well as state and local parks, wilderness reserves and all areas designed to protect wilderness. Even better the celebration will be held outside the square brackets in 2016. Cities and country are tied more closely than ever. Responsible, conscious, ecotourism connects with Indigenous tourism as everyone tries to figure out how to make 'sustainable tourism' develop local community economies and education.

This week Planeta.com celebrates the Centennial by posing some deep dive questions. We don't expect all the answers this week, but we'll work on spotlighting the currrent efforts of using the social web. In particular US national parks deserve kudos for making the most of live, unscripted Periscope videos. Check out the Twitter list!
