Widget = portable chunk of code that can be installed and executed within any separate HTML-based web page by an end user without requiring additional compilation. - Wikipedia

Widgets are plug-ins that can easily be added to a website or blog without needing much technical experience. If you add a Facebook "Like" box to your website, you've installed a widget.

We use widgets to embed code from Flickr to add graphics and videos from YouTube to add videos. You'll also find the widgets from Slideshare presentations and documents.

Quotes

Atomisation (Atomization) is where the content on a site is broken down into smaller fundamental units which can then be distributed via the web through links to other sites. The creation of widgets and gadgets for use on third party sites and the distribution of content via syndicated RSS feeds are the best examples of atomization.
