Ron's note - I am transcribing and updating the talk I made (and recorded) for the WED. It summarized the big ideas and recommendations well enough, but needs to be updated and converted into a new feature.

INTRO

I had the pleasure of keynoting at the 2007 Ecotourism NZ Conference. The presentations on Web 2.0 and Ecotourism and Global Perspectives on Ecotourism were well-received. These talks were followed by a road trip of all road trips with Tom Walter and Trent Yeo, visiting key sites on the South Island and later online by an online dialogue focusing on shared ecotourism challenges in New Zealand and Australia. On a technical level, both countries were just beginning the transition to broadband access in 2007. The virtual and real worlds were intersecting in ways that were engaging, entertaining and educational.

New Zealand stands at the transition from dial-up to broad-band, from not having a definition of ecotourism to ... not having a definition of ecotourism but having a bold strategy promoting sustainable tourism. Where do things stand as we develop ecotourism 2.0? What are New Zealand operators and government officials showing us as the face of local ecotourism?

Web2.0: Flickr

I think the best introduction to Web 2.0 is simply Flickr. It is what gave me the 'a-ha' revelation that the revolutionary web tools are indeed substantively different than the HTML we had a decade ago.

- World Environment Day Group 2008
- Central Otago Collection (Tom Walter)

Some of the brightest gems from New Zealand are the photos shared generously on Flickr by those living in New Zealand. Among the best of the best photographers are Tom Walter (Flow) and Indiginz. A recent new discovery is Kate Pedley's photostream. Groups we recommend include Te Papa's innovative Our Space. Be supportive. Otherwise great galleries such as that of Daniel Murray (South NZ) fade away.

NEW ZEALAND TOURISM STRATEGY

New Zealand - The New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2015 was launched by the Prime Minister Helen Clark on November 7, 2007. The Strategy is underpinned by two key values, kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and manaakitanga (hospitality). According to the NZ Tourism Strategy website: "These values provide the foundation for a sustainable approach to the development of our tourism industry. If we embrace these values, we will achieve our vision for 2015.

2015 is a vision statement, a declaration of where New Zealand is heading.
