Take a deep breath. Do you feel that you have to be everywhere at once but you don't know where to begin? When it comes to digital communication, are you trying not to fall too far behind? Ron Mader's Social Web Workshop - is a simple attempt to weave the virtual and natural worlds. Nothing too techno but we will address the technologies in an ordered fashion. Let's see if this training is for you:

Are you ready for some fun?
Would you benefit from some coaching?
Could you use some tips on encouraging others in being generous and creative online?
Would you like some help in putting together the puzzle that is the social web?

Training is designed to give participants the proper nudge. It's simple, inexpensive and a good use of your time. We focus on strengthening core skills and weaving a healthy web presence for your work.

Note: Ron also offers a specialized Webinar focusing on Parks and Tourism!

Cost

Access to the 5-day training (and Ron's focused attention!) is (US) $200 per person. Tour businesses featured in Planeta.com's World Travel Directory and participants who have participated in previous workshops are charged $100.

Registration

Registration is open

Request
Spread the word! If you have colleagues who might benefit from a Web education upgrade, please let them about the workshop.

Preparation

How do we use the social web to share our stories online? Here are my mega overviews (and conference presentations) archived on Slideshare
http://www.slideshare.net/planeta/upgradeyourworld (7,632 views as of 03.2012)
http://www.slideshare.net/planeta/storytelling-now (15,799 views as of 03.2012)

The basic point to stay focused on key topics, aka stories. Then figure out your allies, those local and international connections who can keep the momentum moving forward. Then we take a deep look at the social web channels, applying the core skills and practicing some exercises so that you get an idea of how these channels work from the inside.

How the online workshop works

Ron's personalized social web workshop is conducted in person or online. In June 2011 the workshop takes place over five days. Instruction includes Skype calls, Web assignments, videos on YouTube and Justin and some old-fashioned email. During the workshop much of the conversation takes place via Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and YouTube.

During the registration, participants are asked which Web channels they use and the top 5 they wish to master. Participants are expected to register for the channels before the workshop begins. We recommend that participants budget time for assignments - minimum 15 minutes a day, average 1 hour/day. If you miss a day, there's no penalty! The advantage of an online workshop are the flexible dates and times. You will be able to access the information at your convenience.

As the beginning of the workshop participants are asked to fill out the 'Storytelling Now' worksheet to identify practical actions that can be undertaken. This should be discussed in real-time via a skype call.

Benefits

Participant websites and Web channels will be featured on this page and in related tweets. What we learn we share in real time.
Participants are eligible to co-teach the workshop with Ron on the ground or using Web in their local community (with Ron's participation via distance).

Options

Like all workshops, training can be tailored upon request. If these dates are not convenient, let's plan something that is mutually beneficial.

Assignments

You don't have to do them all, you don't have to do them all but please start with the low-hanging fruit and be engaged, be creative and be generous!

Who Should Register for The Workshop?

The workshop is open to everyone and will be of most use to those who are in 90% who gain a foothold in the more active 10% (see 90-9-1). Local guides, consultants, government officials, ngo leaders, academics and owners of businesses working in tourism and conservation are invited to register. One of the target audiences are the 40+ generation for whom the social web is confusing. In particular, Ron extends a cordial invite to long-time colleagues. The workshop creates a safe and fun environment to improve your own skills and to see how others are using the Web in new and exciting ways.

How to participate

After registering, please check out Ron's presentation upgrade your world and view Upgrade your world: How to integrate Web tools in promoting Ecotourism. Also please listen to The power of tinkering

During the workshop, be engaged and review this page on a regular basis. Put into practice the tools each day. If you have questions, email Ron or better yet, post your query direct on Twitter.

Before the workshop, register for an account on Flickr. Please add a star (or more) to Ron's photos so that you're on my Flickr radar. Bonus points if you can upload pictures of the following: a local tree, roots, seeds, local food, local museum, city park, your desk ... or something less tangible: silence, inspiration, hyperlocal, awesomeness.

Testimonials

The fact I was being forced to stop and reflect about these things where normally one is always absorbed by the day to day operations

The workshop motivated me to keep trying. I also got to see some examples of how others are integrating these tools into their businesses.

One new channel explained, supported and encouraged at a time. Interaction with Ron is paramount for individual learning and experience

Everyone is Welcome

Friends without the time or money to register are invited to pay attention to this page and join with us on our online adventure.

Be engaged, be creative and be generous!
Blogs - Comment! (Blogs without comments aren't blogs)
Flickr - What's your favorite photo? Give it a star! If you enjoy someone's photos, write a testimonial.
Twitter - Follow and retweet their messages
YouTube - Favorite a video, add it to a playlist

Instructor

The workshop is conducted by Ron Mader, creator of Planeta.com, the first (1994) website focusing on practical ecotourism around the globe. Ron has offered Web workshops in Australia, Ecuador, Mexico, South Africa and the United States. Among Ron's many honors include citation in American Environmental Leaders (2008) which profiles Ron for his work and the International Ecotourism Society presented Ron with the 2010 Innovation Award.

Language

The workshop is taught in English. That said, we will be developing teaching materials and featuring sites in multiple languages. Look for the Maori language lessons and we'll be brushing up on our German, Estonian and Spanish skills as well!

Assignments

Assignments are designed to develop core skills and to build a high trust environment. Assignments are made throughout the workshop, putting concepts into practice. They document the learning environment and encourage others.

Recommended Listening

the power of tinkering - By Design introduces you to John Seely Brown, the co-author [with Douglas Thomas], of A New Culture of Learning: Cultivating the Imagination for a World of Constant Change. In this new book John Seely Brown is particularly interested in the idea of TINKERING. He suggests one of the best 'tinkering' models is the architectural studio - the place where students work together trying to solve each other's problems, and a mentor or master can also take part in open criticism. Find out why this is a model for us all.
