An estuary is a bay where the salt water of a sea mixes with the fresh water of rivers.

FYI: The word ‘petrichor’, which describes the distinct smell of rain, was invented by CSIRO researchers Isabel Joy Bear and Richard Grenfell Thomas

Essay: Water Conservation and the Social Web (Response to Green is the new black — how NGOs can use social media to spark change - @IUCN_Water)

Social media is now a social web of potential interaction, awareness raising and most importantly action. As we collaborate we find new ways to braid the streams into a river of knowledge. Once groups and environmental leaders view the audience as partners, we can make great strides. Once meetings are livestreamed, mainstreaming these topics can advance.

What would I suggest? How about a Google+ hangout in which those working on water conservation could provide a brief show-and-tell of how they are using social media to connect? We will be happy to document the best practices and if you'd like, host such a conversation.

Essay: Embedded water the hidden menace or hidden opportunity?

We are all probably aware that running the tap while brushing our teeth or taking baths instead of short showers wastes water. What most of us aren't aware of is our hidden water footprint. In the United Kingdom for example each resident on average consumes 150 litres of water a day, but when embedded water is included that figure rises to 3400 litres per day. Water is considered to be a local issue and in many ways it is, but buying almonds can affect the water in California's Central Valley is where 80% of the world's almonds are harvested. In many cases localities all over the world affect the water supply in other parts of the world through their consumption of food and goods.
Food consumes vast amounts of fresh water in its production, but just buying a new set of clothes for a vacation can outweigh any water savings made in the eco-lodge by a factor of a hundred.
The 2009 Global Innovation Outlook Report on Water provides some interesting insights into the volume of water required to produce various goods, including:
  • 70 litres of water to make one apple
  • 140 litres of water to make one cup of coffee
  • 1,300 litres of water to make one kilogram of wheat
  • 10,855 litres of water to make one pair of jeans
The good news is that small changes in consumption patterns can lead to dramatic reductions in water consumption.
