Held every two years Te Matatini Kapa Haka Festival celebrates the cultural dance of the Māori people of New Zealand. Over four days audiences experience the best kapa haka in the world, taste Māori food (kai) and local delicacies and shop for Māori arts and crafts. A record 47 teams compete on the 23rd national Te Matatini festival stage.

Ngāti Kahungunu hosted Te Matatini February 22 - 26, 2017 at the Hawke's Bay Sports Park, renamed Kahungunu Park for the month. Hashtag: #TeMatatini2017

Also keep an eye on the Facebook page -- https://www.facebook.com/TeMatatini.

The last time the festival was held in the Kahungunu tribal region was in 1983 when the event was known as the Polynesian Festival. The local iwi has designed an interactive website - http://www.tekahuoteamorangi.com - to help visitors prepare for a memorable stay in Kahungunu.

The festival prides itself on being whānau (family) friendly, smoke, and alcohol free event. It has an open door policy, where all people are welcome to come and experience timeless traditions.

Hakarongo Mai provides a free, simultaneous English translation service throughout live stage performances at the biennial Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Festival. The service aired its first translated broadcast in 2007 after Te Matatini festival organisers recognised a need to cater for the significant numbers of visitors and particularly English speaking audiences attending the festival.

The service has continued to grow in popularity, and demand, with subsequent festivals in Tauranga Moana, Gisborne and Rotorua. Festival goers are able to listen in on their smart phones and access free Wi-Fi.

The Hakarongo Mai English translation service is funded by Te Mangai Paho.

Wishlist for Te Matatini 2017

Kudos to the organizers for hosting such an important event. Here are a few recommendations:
1) Provide free, livestreaming video during the event
2) Tourism New Zealand could provide an explainer and promotion for the event
3) More maps! We'd love to know where the groups are from
4) Connect Te Matatini with other events, including Māori Language Week
5) Global viewing parties

Buzzword Bingo: Te Matatini

History

The event began in 1972 as the Polynesian Festival. The first staging was in Rotorua and the following year it was staged there again and became a biennial event with various titles until Professor Wharehuia Milroy proposed the "many faces" Te Matatini concept in 2004.

Compare and Contrast

To better understand this event, we’re asking readers to compare and contrast the annual Guelaguetza celebration in Mexico to the biannual Te Matatini in New Zealand. One aspect of the Kiwi celebration we particularly like is that English-language translation service is broadcast on local radio and streamed online so that those who do not understand the Māori language have some interpretation, a service sorely lacking with Guelaguetza. We’ll discuss this further during Indigenous Peoples Week.

Te Matatini 2015

Te Matatini 2015 began with a public pōwhiri at North Hagley Park, Christchurch. The kapa haka competition took place over three pool rounds March 5-7. 45 teams compete for the honor of being crowned the best of the best. The top 3 qualifiers from each pool went on to compete in the Finals day competition on March 8.

It has been 29 years since Waitaha (Canterbury) hosted what then known as the Polynesian Festival.

Organizers expected the festival to bring about $6 million into the Christchurch economy.
