South Africa has 11 official languages including Afrikaans, English, Ndebele, Northern Sotho, Sotho, Swazi, Tswana, Tsonga, Venda, Xhosa and Zulu. English is widely spoken and understood throughout the country, with the exception of the remote rural areas. Most of the official road signs are in English.

In 2010 the eyes of the football world focused on South Africa as the FIFA World Cup was hosted for the first time on the African continent. By most accounts, the event was roaring success.

Dating back to 1889, the Currie Cup is one of the oldest rugby competitions in the world and the cornerstone of South Africa's rugby heritage


South Africa is made up of nine provinces: Mpumalanga, North West, Gauteng, Northern Province, Free State, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape.

Football, apartheid and South Africa - The world reacted strongly against apartheid in South Africa with boycotts and sanctions but the boycott against playing sport became the country's Achilles heel. In the lead up to the World Cup next month, a new documentary pays homage to those players who missed out on the international football arena and explores how the game helped bring down apartheid.

South Africa, Past, Present and Future - The images out of South Africa have harked back to an earlier era: razor wire, protest songs, threats of war. As the Rainbow Nation counts down to the World Cup in June, the image it wants to present to the world will need to confront a more complicated reality.
