Slow Down, It's Cape Town @ 05.2011

Those in the know value slow.

If you know that you can die any day, you learn to appreciate and savor the living moments. We also learn how to uni-task. Instead of tweeting and talking and walking and making lunch plans, we live in the moment and pare down what we're doing to the essentials. If not uni-tasking, then at least focusing.

Among the key trends: the movement toward slow (including slow travel and slow food) and gameification. Could we combine the two? On this page you'll find news about upcoming events and a review of the slow events we've created. On Facebook, share your Slow Adventures.

The Slow Movement - Let's see there's slow food, slow cities, slow sex and even slow travel. So why go slow when there's so much to do? And why has the movement seen such rapid growth in the last 10 years?

The Slow Revolution - How can we deal with the addictive nature of speed? Carl Honoré, Gervais Williams, Deepa Patel and Kate Fletcher explore how we can improve our quality of life, well-being and creativity by applying the principles of slow.

You need not do anything.
Remain sitting at your table and listen.
You need not even listen, just wait.
You need not even wait,
just learn to be quiet, still and solitary.
And the world will freely offer itself to you unmasked.
It has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.

Slow Adventure Saturday

June 2011, Slow Adventure Saturday, Oaxaca de Juárez, México
Our next Slow Adventure is an improvised walk to visit friends in some off our favorite places in Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico. We'll visit some of our favorite markets, folk art stores and restaurants, including Mercado Pochimilco, Mezcaloteca, Los Amantes, Comala and Jarcieria El Arte Oaxaqueño. There will also be many spontaneous decisions. We will patronize local businesses and sample Oaxaca's slowest drink ... mezcal during our very slow walk. If you care to join in person, please RSVP. If you care to join virtually, favorite this photo and talk it up on Twitter and Facebook.
Meeting Point: Pochimilco, 1pm-ish
Cost: Free. We ask participants to patronize local businesses and when possible to buy stuff en route (tamales, mezcal, candy, postcards) that can be given to our hosts.
Tips: Bring a hat and refillable water bottle. Extra points if you bring your own jícara or copita de carrizo
Language: Mostly Spanish, some English and a smattering of Oaxaca's Indigenous languages including words for 'delicious' and 'thank you'
Games: Lingosticks, QR Codes
Checklist: Patronize local businesses, Learn a few words in an Indigenous language, Sample mezcal, Ask permission to take a photo in the market, Take photos in the market, Take photos in the city park, Upload photos to Facebook and Flickr, Tweet, Checkin on Foursquare, Decipher the QR Codes, Record via ipadio

A Few Words about Oaxaca's Weavings

Walk with the weavers! The Zapotec community of Teotitlán del Valle (elevation: 1,670 meters or 5,500 feet) is world-famous for production of colorful wool rugs (laadi in Zapotec). To address the problem of declining sales and tourism to individual weaver homes, is collaborating with artisans and the local community museum to connect travelers and weavers. Hopefully we will have weavers on hand for the afternoon chat. If not, we encourage you to support the artisans by adding stars to their Flickr photos and letting others know about Mexico's popular folkart.
