Grantham

The day that changed Grantham - 'Within two minutes it went from being no water out in the street to being waist deep inside the shop.' When Queensland went under water in January this year the tiny town of Grantham suffered the greatest loss of life: 12 people died. The locals clung to fences, floated on top of cars and supported each other to survive the unexpected and sudden wall of muddy water and debris that inundated their town. You'll hear tales of fear, bravery and loss in this moving radio feature.

Rockhampton

Rockhampton
Rockhampton is surrounded by coastal and rural landscapes and is located on the Fitzroy River. The city was founded in 1855 and has a reputation as Australia's beef capital. The city lies 40 kilometers inland from the Capricorn Coast Beaches. The drive from Rockhampton to Brisbane is eight hours.

Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast is one of the fastest-growing regions in Australia. Its current population of 300,000 is expected to reach half a million in just under 20 years. The iconic coastal strip is environmentally vulnerable. The mayor of the new regional mega-council proposes a population cap, restricting the population to 400,000.

The 16-meter (52-foot) fibreglass Big Pineapple has attracted millions of visitors since it opened on Queensland's Sunshine Coast tourist strip in 1971. The Queensland Heritage Council placed the 16-meter (52-foot) fiberglass pineapple on its register in March 2009, ranking it alongside the state's top historic buildings and cultural sites. The pineapple was one of the first of the Big Things that dot the Australian landscape. These include the Big Banana at Coffs Harbour, the Big Merino sheep at Goulburn, the Big Trout at Adaminaby and the Big Gumboot, an oversized rubber boot in Australia's wettest town, Tully in Queensland.

The Dreaming Festival

Last month, thousands of people were welcomed by the traditional owners onto Jinibara country in the Sunshine Coast hinterland for The Dreaming Festival. Every year, speakers debate some critical issues in Indigenous culture and this year it was no different; panels ranged over everything from intellectual property, copyright and protocol to sexuality, eldership, history and political activism.

Draft Queensland Ecotourism Plan 2013-2020
http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/tourism/ecotourism/investments.html

'The Plan' aka Queensland Ecotourism Plan (draft for consulation) 2013 – 2020 (PDF) has been released for comment, "with the vision to make the state the number one destination in Australia and a world leader in ecotourism."

The Plan comes out of the inaugural Destination Q workshop held in Cairns in June 2012 and recognises that Queensland’s greatest competitive advantage is nature-based tourism in a unique environment. The Plan has a number of specific actions for development, such as delivery of a 20 year strategic plan for Queensland tourism, reducing red tape, improving decision making and government support, facilitating new investment, and improving tourism skills.
