What are the benefits of formal registration?

  • Course participant websites and channels are featured on this page and in related tweets. What we learn we share in real time.
  • By the end of the course participants will be more skilled in social networking and how to integrate services with one another.
  • Participants are eligible to co-teach the webinar as a local workshop with Ron on the ground in their local community or with Ron's participation via Google Hangout.

What is the timing for the course?

The workshop takes place over three days (in sequence or spread over two weeks).

Each day, homework assignments will be given in an email and on twitter. Special tutorial sessions will be scheduled with parts recorded and uploaded as a an audio podcast or video screencast. We recommend at least three google hangouts or skype calls during the webinar.

We recommend that participants budget time for their assignments - minimum 15 minutes a day or up to 1 hour/day if you want to get stuck in. Whatever you decide, budget the time necessary. Please note that you do not have to register for each channel, only the ones that are of greatest interest. Also, if you miss a day, there's no penalty! You can plan ahead or catch up accordingly.

Each week we are focusing on multiple social web channels but used in different manners. Week One will look at what you can create, share and curate. Week Two answers any questions brought up in Week One. Those who complete this webinar will have developed a practical, working knowledge of how to communicate using the ever expanding universe of the social web.

Why is digital literacy important?

Professionals working on tourism and protected areas need to be effective communicators and this includes digital literacy. The challenge lies in the technological revolution in the past ten years. What was prohibitively expensive a decade ago is commonplace on a cellphone today. The internet, and social networking sites are increasingly used to share information in a lively, timely fashion. The Parks and Tourism Webinar will be of most use to professionals who need some assistance with the Social Web evolution. The workshop creates a safe and fun environment to improve skills and engage with others using the Web in new and inspiring ways.

Whether you need to promote events, sell tours, develop case studies, collaborate with colleagues, this workshop will help give you the proper nudge in developing web literacy. The workshop is a simple, inexpensive and a productive use of your time. We focus on strengthening core skills and developing a healthy web presence for your work.

What will be included in the workshop?

Participants will review and tinker with (hands on keyboard please!) more than a dozen social web channels, including blogs, Facebook, Linked-In, Flickr, Google+, Slideshare, Twitter, TripAdvisor, Wikipedia, wikis and YouTube. We also focus on specialty websites including Ecoturismo Genuino and ProtectedPlanet.net.

Instruction takes the form of emails, tweets as well as arranged google hangouts or skype calls. assignments and recommendations posted on Twitter. During the workshop the Parks Webinar Slideshare presentation will be updated to document what the participants created and shared.

Regarding the assignments, you don't have to do them all, but please do something. Start with what's simple first.

Who is this course designed for?

The webinar is open to professionals working on tourism and protected areas. Pros include protected area managers, tourism operators, owners of businesses working in tourism and conservation, guides, academics, representatives of NGOs or consultants. One of the target audiences is the 40+ generation who are trying to put their head around the social web. In particular, Ron extends a cordial invite to long-time colleagues!

How do I prepare for the training?

Register for the channels you plan to use and write down your id and password! As the beginning of the workshop participants are asked to modify and fill out the 'Storytelling Now' worksheet to focus on the topics of greatest interest and to identify practical actions. This should be discussed in real-time via a google hangout. Also please add a star to the image and print the Parks Web Worksheet.

The basic point to stay focused on key topics, aka stories of interest to you. Then figure out your allies, those local and international connections who can keep the momentum moving forward. Then we take a deep look at the Web channels, applying the core skills and practicing some exercises so that you get an idea of how these channels work from the inside.

Before the workshop, register for an account on Flickr. Please add a star (or more) to Ron's photos so that you're on my Flickr radar. Bonus points if you can upload pictures of the following: a local tree, roots, seeds, local food, local museum, city park, your desk ... or something less tangible: silence, inspiration, hyperlocal, awesomeness.

And during the workshop?

During the workshop, be engaged and review this page at least once per day. Put into practice the tools. If you have questions, email Ron or better yet, post your query direct on Twitter.

  • Tools to provide technical assistance on tourism and protected areas - e.g. online Q&A; resource library; links to experts; links to tools/training materials - to park managers and tourism operators
