⚡️ “Open Data Day”

Open Data Day - - is an annual celebration of open data all over the world. For the seventh time in history, groups from around the world will create local events on the day where they will use open data in their communities. It is an opportunity to show the benefits of open data and encourage the adoption of open data policies in government, business and civil society. All outputs are open for everyone to use and re-use.

For Open Data Day 2017, things are being taken up a notch. The focus this year will be on four key areas that we believe open data can solve.
  • Open research data
  • Tracking public money flows
  • Open data for environment
  • Open data for human rights

This year, Open knowledge International has helped to build the Open Data Day website and is giving mini grants with SPARC and HIVOS to help and get events up and running. Anyone can contribute to Open Data Day either by using the list or contribute to the GitHub repo. This is a real bottom-up initiative that is coordinated on this mailing list.

Jonathan Harris was the keynote speaker at a Vivid Festival session called Make Data Beautiful.
He trawls the internet extracting massive doses of data that he converts into projects and artworks. For example, he'll extract, on a massive scale, phrases like "I feel", and as he collates and shapes this, he is, he says, taking the human emotional temperature at that point in time.
He pulls together elements of computer science, anthropology, photos, diaries, stories, poems and publishes them on the internet.
