Las Vegas is the most populous city in the state of Nevada and hosted more than 41 million visitors in 2016. It's an industry town and the industry is entertainment.

Nearly 2.1 million of Nevada's 2.8 million residents live in Clark County, which covers the Las Vegas metro area and then some. Locals and visitors are key to southern Nevada's cultures and economies.

Outdoor Adventures

Las Vegas is an excellent hub for nearby outdoor adventures. Nearby state parks include Red Rock and Valley of Fire. National Parks within three hours include Death Valley, Grand Canyon and Zion. Lake Mead National Recreation Area is 24 miles southeast of the city and in the winter there's snow on the nearby Spring Mountains northwest of town (great to combine with a visit to the Desert National Wildlife Refuge and Tule Springs National Monument). Further north is another brand-new national monument, Basin and Range. Closer to town (and Sam Boyd Stadium) is Clark County Wetlands Park. The city's parks are exceptional.

Essay: Authentic / Inauthentic

While there is a great value in the authentic experience, millions value the 'inauthentic' if it's well done. Where else in the world are Egyptian pyramids, French landmarks and New York theme parks within blocks of one another?

No one would mistake the Luxor Casino for one of the pyramids in Egypt or the roller coasters at New York, New York for Coney Island. These landmarks are famous for being replicas of famous places.

Las Vegas owes much to its natural springs which attracted the Paiute and later Spanish explorers. The name (Spanish for 'the meadows') due to the lush grass that surrounded the springs.

1905 - Las Vegas was founded on May 15, 1905 when 110 acres near Stewart/Garces/Main/Fifth (Las Vegas Blvd.) were auctioned. Hashtag: #HappyBirthdayVegas

Las Vegas is founded as a city on May 15, 1905, when 110 acres of land situated between Stewart Avenue on the north, Garces Avenue to the south, Main Street to the west, and 5th Street (Las Vegas Boulevard) to the east, are auctioned off.

In 1931 the town was changed by the legalization of gambling and the construction of Boulder Dam (later named Hoover Dam), which attracted new residents and visitors. According to the 2000 U.S. Census Las Vegas was the fastest-growing metropolitan area with an 83.3 percent growth rate.

The Post Office name was changed after 10 years from "Los Vegas" to "Las Vegas" on Dec 9, 1903

    First Friday

Las Vegas hosts First Friday ... the first Friday every month. The event debuted in October 2002 and has more than its fair share of ups and downs. Sometimes a gathering is large and rambunxious. Most lately it's just a quiet night where people are unsure of where the party is.

    Las Vegas Sign

On the median of Las Vegas Boulevard South, near Mandalay Bay, the iconic sign built in 1959 is a popular attraction for visitors. Betty Willis designed the sign and donated it to her city. The 25-foot-tall sign is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The sign has been moved several times, deployed farther and farther south to remain on the periphery of casino development.

Recycling in Las Vegas Hotels - "One thing that makes recycling in Las Vegas different from other areas in the country is the ability to easily recycle food waste. Waste Management Inc./RC Farms a local pig farm and recycling company, offers an alternative way to deal with food no longer suitable for human consumption. The family business was started thirty years ago by Robert Combs (RC). According to Clint Combs, son and General Manager of Waste Management Inc., thirty tons of food waste is picked up from local hotels and restaurants in Las Vegas every day. Food waste is taken to the pig farm, processed, cooked and fed to the more than 6000 pigs at the farm. Since composting can be difficult in Las Vegas' dry desert climate, the pig farm offers a viable alternative to landfilling a useful resource.",-115.1331644,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x80c8e851e7eeb165:0xd746f5b90d96893b?hl=en
