Durban, South Africa: INDABA -- -- is one of the largest tourism trade shows on the African calendar. The event attracts more than 13,000 delegates from the travel tourism and related industries. It takes place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli ICC Complex and showcases the widest variety of Southern Africa's best tourism products, and attracts international visitors and media from across the world.

2017 dates are May 16-18

How to improve Indaba 2016?
Having enjoyed Indaba 2012 thanks to the inaugural Responsible Tourism in Cities workshop, the event is passing from global attention due to its lack of interactivity and innovation. While it offers a great deal to those physically present, there have been few attempts to reach out to remote participants and future visitors via realtime, online engagement.

Google+ Hangouts before, during and after Indaba that provide a lively conversation
Livestreaming video (requires reliable wifi for those physically present and strategies for remote participants)
Satellite events elsewhere in Durban, South Africa and around the world that improve our understanding of Southern Africa
More local events that show off Durban. In 2011 we enjoyed a walk around the city's traditional markets and were able to meet locals. Are there any similar walks planned this year?
