RTD4 International Conference on Responsible Tourism in Destinations
This is the 4th International Conference on Responsible Tourism in Destinations, it is being held in Oman to explore the application of the principles of Responsible Tourism, which originated in the UNWTO’s Global Code of Ethics and the 2002 Cape Town Declaration on Responsible Tourism in Destinations, This will be the fist time that there has been a conference in Arabia about Responsible Tourism. There are new issues on the agenda; tourism in a finite world, Human Resources, The 4th International Conference on Responsible Tourism in Destinations has four themes
  1. Tourism, Livelihoods, Local Economic Development and Human Resources
  2. Responsible Tourism in a World of Finite Resources
  3. The Responsible Tourist, Tangible and Intangible Heritage -
  4. Responsible Destinations and Marketing
The human resources, finite world, tangible and intangible heritage and Responsible Tourism marketing are themes which have not been considered at previous International Conferences on Responsible Tourism in Destinations. This will also be an opportunity to hear about Oman’s new Responsible Tourism Policy being developed to inform the Ministry of Tourism’s strategy for the next five year plan 2011- 2015


The programme has been designed to ensure that there is protected time for discussion and to enable delegates to participate in discussion and to get their questions answered.


The Conference is being co-chaired by Oman’s Tourism Minister, Her Excellency Dr Rajiha Abdul Ameer Ali and Professor Harold Goodwin from Leeds Metropolitan University’s International Centre for Responsible Tourism. Harold Goodwin and the UNWTO are also assisting the Ministry of Tourism in a review of Responsible Tourism policy, the outcomes of which will be discussed at the conference.

The Ministry of Tourism is determined to take responsibility for ensuring that tourism development in Oman is sustainable and that it benefits all Omanis. They are determined to get it right. The Ministry of Tourism has decided to base its Strategic Plan for the next five years on a national Responsible Tourism Policy. The Responsible Tourism Policy will engage all stakeholders and form the basis for the Ministry of Tourism’s 8th Five Year Plan which will be implemented 2011- 2015.

The 10th of October is dedicated academic papers and the presentation and discussion of reports from the international delegates on progress in implementing Responsible Tourism since RTD3 in Belize.

The tourism industry can play an important role in the local economic development of a destination. For many destinations, poverty is a key issue which feeds into many other aspects of the communities which are visited. The conference, organised by the International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT) explored how can tourism can contribute to poverty reduction and local economic development.
