The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) -- http://www.unwto.org -- is a specialized agency of the United ‎Nations and the leading international organization in the field of tourism. It serves as a ‎global forum for tourism policy issues and a practical source of tourism know-how.‎ UNWTO is committed to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (see: global goals), geared ‎toward reducing poverty and fostering sustainable development.‎

UNWTO promotes tourism as a driver of economic growth, inclusive development and environmental sustainability and offers leadership and support to the sector in advancing knowledge and tourism policies worldwide.

UNWTO encourages the implementation of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism.

UNWTO’s membership includes 157 countries, 6 Associate Members and over 480 Affiliate Members representing the private sector, educational institutions, tourism associations and local tourism authorities.

In 2003 UNWTO became an official member of the United Nations family. The launch of the Guidebook “Sustainable tourism for development” will offer opportunities for DEVCO Services in Brussels and the 180 EU Delegations worldwide, and Developing Countries to better include and maximize the positive impacts of sustainable tourism in their development strategies.

The Study and Guidebook contributes to the positioning of tourism within the overarching framework for action on green growth, poverty eradication and sustainable development post-2015, stemming from Rio+20 and addressed by the European Commission in Communication (2013) 92 A Decent Life for All: Ending poverty and giving the world a sustainable future (http://ec.europa.eu/europeaid/documents/2013-02-22_communication_a_decent_life_for_all_post_2015_en.pdf)

The European Commission, Directorate General Development Cooperation (DEVCO) has approached UNWTO to assist in creating a Guidebook on Sustainable Tourism for Development, demonstrating that tourism can be as an engine for development, stimulating trade in services (linkages), job creation and poverty reduction.

Such collaboration demonstrates the increasing interest and recognition of tourism as an engine for development, trade in services and linkages with productive capacities, employment and poverty reduction.
