Cultural Diversity Under Attack

The intensity and the number of attacks against cultural heritage have increased significantly in recent years, particularly in the Middle East and Africa. The persecution of individuals for cultural or religious reasons, combined with the systematic destruction of their cultural heritage, has marked the emergence of a form of cultural cleansing that is unprecedented in recent history.

In this context, UNESCO organized a High-Level conference and technical meeting to highlight the importance of protecting culture.

UNESCO launched the Memory of the World Programme in 1992. New Zealand’s Memory of the World Programme was established in 2010 and is an example of the international community working to promote the importance of documentary heritage through UNESCO. This UNESCO programme sits alongside UNESCO’s World Heritage List and Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Memory of the World Programme register is the flagship and promotes the nation’s heritage stories to the wider community in New Zealand and overseas.
