Las Vegas is the most populous city in the state of Nevada and hosted more than 41 million visitors in 2016.

Nearly 2.1 million of Nevada's 2.8 million residents live in Clark County, which covers the Las Vegas metro area and then some. Locals and visitors are key to southern Nevada's cultures and economies.

History

Happy Birthday, Las Vegas! Hashtag: #HappyBirthdayVegas

Las Vegas was founded on May 15, 1905 when 110 acres near Stewart/Garces/Main/Fifth (Las Vegas Blvd.) were auctioned.

Outdoor Adventures

Las Vegas is an excellent hub for nearby outdoor adventures. Nearby state parks include Red Rock and Valley of Fire. National Parks within three hours include Death Valley, Grand Canyon and Zion. Lake Mead National Recreation Area is 24 miles southeast of the city and in the winter there's snow on the nearby Spring Mountains northwest of town (great to combine with a visit to the Desert National Wildlife Refuge and Tule Springs National Monument). Further north is another brand-new national monument, Basin and Range. Closer to town (and Sam Boyd Stadium) is Clark County Wetlands Park. The city's parks are exceptional.

News

The news scene is an all-you-can-consume mix of freebie weeklies, a daily deadtree (still without the promised
ombudsperson), old-school radio and TV and innovative web empires like the just-started Nevada Independent . Recommended local columnists: Ask a native and Green Felt Journal from Vegas Seven. And for those getting news as disagregated tweets, here are Vegas accounts to follow on Twitter.

Downtown

Tip: Read/download the map of historic downtown courtesy of the city government.

Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park

500 E. Washington Avenue
Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park - The first permanent non-native settlers in the Las Vegas Valley were a group of Mormon missionaries who built an adobe fort along Las Vegas Creek in 1855. The fort was called Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort. They successfully farmed the area by diverting water from the creek.Today, the park includes a remnant of the original adobe fort, which contains interpretive displays. The Visitor Center contains exhibits on the history of the site, as well as historic artifacts. Historic interpretation is and will remain the focus of the park.

10 Things We Love about First Friday Las Vegas @FirstFridayLV #firstfridaylv #rtcities

    First Friday

Las Vegas hosts First Friday ... the first Friday every month. The event debuted in October 2002 and has more than its fair share of ups and downs. Sometimes a gathering is large and rambunxious. Most lately it's just a quiet night where people are unsure of where the party is.

    Las Vegas Sign

On the median of Las Vegas Boulevard South, near Mandalay Bay, the iconic sign built in 1959 is a popular attraction for visitors. Betty Willis designed the sign and donated it to her city. The 25-foot-tall sign is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The sign has been moved several times, deployed farther and farther south to remain on the periphery of casino development.

    CityCenter

City Center is the largest privately funded construction project in the history of the United States. The project was started by MGM Mirage and Dubai World. The complex opened on December 16, 2009 and at a pricetag of $8.5 billion, occupies 67 acres of the Las Vegas Strip between Frank Sinatra Drive and Las Vegas Boulevard.

CityCenter says that it provides a blueprint for the future combining a healthy quality of life with a commitment to sustainable design and construction. CityCenter achieved LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, for its innovative approach to site development, preserving indoor environmental quality, water savings, energy efficiency and materials selection.

More than $40 million was spent on outdoor art, including original sculptures and a colorful bouquet of canoes.

"The question regarding whether CityCenter will profitably grow the Las Vegas market, or result in significant profit cannibalization of existing properties, is about to be answered," Michael Paladino wrote in the report for Fitch Ratings Service cited in the Las Vegas Review Journal (December 2009).

The opening of City Center added 4,500 hotel rooms to the local market. The complex is betting on high-end attractions, including the Crystals shopping center.

Water Use and Conservation in a Time of Drought

    http://www.newyorker.com/tech/elements/where-the-water-goes

    http://www.lvvwd.com - @lvvwd

"The Southern Nevada Water Authority, speaking for Las Vegas, thinks the solution lies beneath four valleys in Eastern Nevada, with a multibillion dollar pipeline that would pump valley water into Las Vegas. The plan sounds sensible to most business owners and developers in Las Vegas and surrounding Clark County, but Nevadans further east, particularly farmers and ranchers, fear the project would deplete already scarce resources, threatening their way of life." - Jim Malewitz, More Water for Las Vegas Means More Resentment in Rural Areas

The Federal government has warned that water could run out for the city by 2025. More recently, researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography said there was a 50 percent chance that Lake Mead, which supplies Vegas, Los Angeles and San Diego with water, could run dry by 2021.

    Recycling

Recycling in Las Vegas Hotels - "One thing that makes recycling in Las Vegas different from other areas in the country is the ability to easily recycle food waste. Waste Management Inc./RC Farms a local pig farm and recycling company, offers an alternative way to deal with food no longer suitable for human consumption. The family business was started thirty years ago by Robert Combs (RC). According to Clint Combs, son and General Manager of Waste Management Inc., thirty tons of food waste is picked up from local hotels and restaurants in Las Vegas every day. Food waste is taken to the pig farm, processed, cooked and fed to the more than 6000 pigs at the farm. Since composting can be difficult in Las Vegas' dry desert climate, the pig farm offers a viable alternative to landfilling a useful resource."

    History

Las Vegas owes much to its natural springs which attracted Spanish explorers. The name (Spanish for 'the meadows') due to the lush grass that surrounded the springs.

Las Vegas celebrates its birthday on May 15.

    http://www.lasvegasnevada.gov/factsstatistics/history.htm
Las Vegas is founded as a city on May 15, 1905, when 110 acres of land situated between Stewart Avenue on the north, Garces Avenue to the south, Main Street to the west, and 5th Street (Las Vegas Boulevard) to the east, are auctioned off.

In 1931 the town was changed by the legalization of gambling and the construction of Boulder Dam (later named Hoover Dam), which attracted new residents and visitors. According to the 2000 U.S. Census Las Vegas was the fastest-growing metropolitan area with an 83.3 percent growth rate.

The Post Office name was changed after 10 years from "Los Vegas" to "Las Vegas" on Dec 9, 1903

    Authenticity

While there is a great value in the authentic experience, millions value the 'inauthentic' if it's well done. No one would mistake the Luxor Casino for one of the pyramids in Egypt or the roller coasters at New York, New York for Coney Island. These landmarks are famous for being replicas. Where else in the world are Egyptian pyramids, French landmarks and New York theme parks within blocks of one another?

    Travel Tips

Best view of the skyline? James Reza has three suggestions: the very top of East Bonanza or East Charleston, Spring Mountain at Durango and the High Roller at night.

First Friday - History: Since it began in October of 2002, First Friday has only continued to grow. It is now considered the premier arts event in Las Vegas. From the shops and galleries on Charleston (the Arts Factory, S2, Main Gallery and more) to the new galleries on Main Street (Atomic Todd and others) to the Commerce Street Studios, down to the whimsical offerings of The Funk House antique store, and the art galleries and vintage shops in the cottages on Colorado. While many people love to walk the neighborhood particularly now with our new beautiful streetscape on Casino Center, we provide arts tour trolleys that make rounds throughout the area.

For art aficionados, First Friday is celebrated in the Arts District of Downtown Las Vegas. The hub is on Casino Center Blvd in between Colorado St and California St. We have extended First Friday to include Fremont East district with live mural paintings and music on 6th St and Fremont

(First Friday Map) and make pick ups every 15-20 minutes throughout the evening. And no matter how you decide to get around, you can always expect a diverse crowd, cool local art, live music, street performances and plenty of surprises! More than 80 galleries, restaurants and retail businesses work together to make the First Friday experience unique to the Las Vegas downtown arts district. Volunteers currently jury the art, work the information tables, set up and tear down parts of the event, place the trolley signs, coordinate the trolley guides, and sell soda and water to benefit First Friday.

    Quotes

Nevada gaming revenues cratered 22.3 percent, while revenue on the Strip crumbled 25.8 percent. According to the Nevada Gaming Commission, statewide gaming revenues were $905.0 million, while on the Strip the gambling take was $475.0 million. For the year, gaming revenues in Nevada are down 18.2 percent. These resorts typically make about 40 percent of their income from the casino, a percentage that has steadily declined during the last decade as the properties added tons of other amenities such as world class dining and entertainment. But those numbers don’t truly reflect what’s happening on the Strip. From the way things are being reported in the press, it’s easy - but erroneous - to believe the city is no longer attracting hordes of people. Numbers may be down somewhat (about 10 percent through McCarran Airport), but the real problem is not that people aren’t showing up. It’s that when they get there, nervous consumers are keeping their wallets shut.
    - Vaunted Vegas Coming Down to Earth (December 2008)

The last decade was social. The next decade is gaming.
    - Seth Priebatsch, The game layer on top of the world

You’ve got one of the most well-known cities in the world. There's a huge gap between what the world knows is Las Vegas and what we’re living in (downtown). We’re coming from a raw place, which is exciting. The amount of incredibly intelligent and experienced people has created a once-in-a-lifetime learning opportunity.
