Denali is a local Koyukon Athabascan name for the mountain, which is the highest in North America,

In the book “Shem Pete’s Alaska” linguist James Keri of the Alaska Native Language Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks wrote: “The name Denali is derived from the Koyukon name. This name does not mean 'The Great One,' as is commonly believed, but is instead based on a verb theme meaning 'high' or 'tall.'"

Denali was the first national park established to conserve wildlife in 1917.
